Hard Hand Strategies
A hard hand is any hand that does not contain an Ace, or contains an Ace counted as 1. When you have a hard 12 through 16 (the "stiff hand" range), basic strategy recommends hitting against dealer upcards 7 through Ace, as these dealer cards statistically produce strong hands. Against weaker dealer upcards (2-6), you should stand on hard 12 and above, as the dealer is more likely to bust.
Soft Hand Strategies
A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11 without busting. With soft 17 or lower (Ace-6 through Ace-10), always hit because the Ace provides downside protection. Only stand on soft 18 or higher, except when the dealer shows a 9, 10, or Ace, in which case you should double down on soft 13-18 when mathematically appropriate.
Pair Splitting Decisions
Always split Aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s. For other pairs, decision depends on the dealer's upcard: split 2s and 3s against dealer 4-7, split 4s only against 5-6, split 6s against 3-6, split 7s against 2-7, and split 9s against 2-6 and 8-9. Understanding pair splitting maximizes winning opportunities with strong starting hands.
Doubling Down Strategy
Double down on hard 11 against any dealer card except Ace. Double on hard 10 against dealer 2-9. Double on hard 9 against dealer 3-6. Additionally, double on soft 13-18 against dealer 5-6, and soft 16-18 against dealer 4. Doubling down at optimal moments significantly impacts your long-term results.
